What You Need To Know
How our pathology lab supports accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning.
Understanding Pathology Lab Processing
Pathology lab test results determine the cause and nature of diseases and help doctors correctly diagnose and treat patients at Desert Foot and Ankle. Having lab capabilities available as part of your care means the information needed to guide treatment decisions can be gathered efficiently and reviewed by your provider.
Desert Foot and Ankle offers the convenience of a pathology lab which allows for testing of body tissues (samples from biopsies) and fluids (blood). Typical services and tests include needle aspirations, fungal or bacterial cultures. Results of tests performed in the pathology lab aide physicians in diagnosing and treating patients.
Pathology testing is often used when a provider needs to identify the specific cause of a skin, nail, or soft tissue concern. For example, a fungal culture can confirm whether a persistent toenail change is caused by a fungal infection, while a bacterial culture can identify the organism responsible for a wound or infection so that treatment can be targeted appropriately.
Biopsies and needle aspirations may be recommended when a lesion, growth, or fluid-filled area needs closer evaluation. The sample is collected in the office and sent for processing, and your provider then reviews the results with you and discusses the next steps in your care.
If your podiatrist has recommended a biopsy, culture, or other diagnostic sample, we will explain what to expect during collection, when results are typically available, and how those results will shape your treatment plan.
Inside the Diagnostic Process
Learn how pathology testing can provide valuable insights into foot and nail conditions, helping guide accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatment decisions.
The Convenience of On-Site Lab Services
Having pathology services connected to your podiatry care streamlines the diagnostic process. Samples collected during your visit can be processed and interpreted with your foot and ankle history in mind, which supports clear communication between the lab and the provider treating you.
Common reasons a podiatrist may order pathology testing include suspected fungal nail or skin infections, non-healing wounds, unusual skin lesions, cysts or fluid collections, and infections that have not responded to initial treatment. Identifying the specific organism or tissue changes involved allows for more precise treatment rather than a trial-and-error approach.
When a sample is collected, your provider will explain the procedure, whether it involves a small tissue biopsy, a nail clipping, a swab, or a needle aspiration. Most in-office collections are brief, and any care instructions for the collection site will be reviewed with you before you leave.
Once results are available, your provider will contact you to review the findings and discuss recommendations. Depending on what the results show, next steps may include topical or oral medications, wound care, further imaging, or a procedure to address the underlying issue.
If you have questions about a test that has been ordered or about results you have received, our team is available to walk you through what the findings mean for your treatment plan.
