FAQs

What conditions do your specialists treat?

Our board-certified podiatrists treat a wide range of foot and ankle conditions for patients of every age, including:

  • Ingrown toenails, fungal infections, and calluses
  • Chronic heel pain and plantar fasciitis
  • Sprains, fractures, and tendon injuries
  • Bunions, hammertoes, and other structural changes
  • Pediatric foot concerns and diabetic foot care

Because children often have difficulty describing foot pain and diabetic patients face higher risk of complications, we recommend an evaluation for any persistent symptom, regardless of age.

Can a podiatrist help with foot pain caused by sports activities?

Yes. We regularly treat sports-related injuries in both young athletes and active adults across the Valley. Our specialists evaluate gait and movement patterns to determine what is placing excess stress on the foot or ankle, whether that stems from youth sports, running, or recreational activity. Depending on the findings, treatment may include:

  • Custom orthotics to correct an underlying alignment issue
  • Physical therapy to rebuild strength and mobility safely
  • Age-appropriate activity modifications for young athletes
  • Bracing to support the area during recovery

Addressing an injury early helps young patients in particular avoid disruptions to growth and development.

What should I expect during my first foot and ankle evaluation?

Your first visit typically follows this process:

  • A thorough discussion of your symptoms, including onset, triggers, and impact on daily activities
  • A physical examination to assess range of motion, swelling, and tenderness
  • On-site digital X-rays, if your provider determines imaging is necessary
  • A clear, unhurried explanation of your diagnosis and treatment plan

If you are bringing a child in for evaluation, noting when you first observed a limp or change in walking pattern can help your provider identify the issue more efficiently.

Do you offer non-surgical treatment options before recommending surgery?

Yes. Most conditions we treat are resolved without surgery. Prior to recommending a surgical approach, our specialists typically consider:

  • Custom-fitted orthotics for structural support
  • Stretching protocols and physical therapy
  • Advanced non-invasive treatment options
  • Targeted injections for inflamed joints or tendons
  • Footwear guidance based on your foot structure and stage of life

Should surgery be recommended, your provider will explain the procedure and expected recovery in detail before any decision is made.

Can I get a second opinion on a foot or ankle condition or proposed surgery?

Yes, second opinions are welcome for both diagnoses and proposed surgical procedures. Our team will carefully review your existing imaging and medical history, perform an independent examination, and provide clear guidance so you have all the information needed before moving forward.

Do you accept my insurance, and how can I confirm my coverage?

We accept most major insurance plans, including but not limited to Aetna, Banner Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Centene, Cigna, Dignity Health/Ascension Health, Health Choice Arizona, Medicare, Optum Care Network, Tricare West Region, United Healthcare, and University Family Care. Since coverage details vary by plan, we recommend calling our office ahead of your visit so our team can confirm your specific benefits.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Same-week appointments are typically available, with same-day openings common as well. A primary care referral is usually not required to schedule a visit. For urgent concerns, such as a recent injury or sudden swelling, call us for immediate availability options so your child or family member can be evaluated without delay.

Do you provide on-site digital X-rays?

Yes. Every Desert Foot & Ankle location is equipped with on-site digital X-ray imaging, allowing your exam and imaging to take place during the same visit rather than requiring a separate appointment.

How will I receive my diagnostic test or imaging results?

Results are made available through your secure Patient Portal as soon as they are ready. We then schedule a follow-up appointment so your provider can review the findings with you and outline next steps in your treatment plan.

How often should I visit a podiatrist?

Recommended visit frequency depends on age, health status, and activity level:

  • Generally healthy adults: an annual check-up, especially if you use orthotics
  • Children and young athletes: periodic evaluations as they grow, particularly if participating in competitive sports
  • Patients with diabetes or circulation concerns: at least one visit per year, sometimes with closer monitoring particularly for higher-risk individuals
  • Acute pain or injury: we recommend scheduling a visit promptly rather than waiting

Because same-day and same-week appointments are typically available, there is rarely a reason to delay care for any member of your family.
