Custom Orthotics and Bracing Solutions
Orthotics are medical devices podiatrists at our offices prescribe to patients. They are custom made insoles you place inside your shoes to support the bones, joints, and muscles of your feet. Having an orthotic fit properly is critical to prevent pain and ensure your feet are comfortable all day long.
A custom orthotic does so much more than an insole. An insole tends to be soft and flexible, while a custom orthotic is rigid and strong. The insole is designed to contour to the foot, while the orthotic is designed to support your plantar ligaments. These are medical devices, not the over-the-counter arch supports you buy off the rack.
Our podiatrists recommend orthotics for biomechanical foot issues like tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, neuromas, shin splints, high arches, and flatfeet. Orthotics also help people who need more support due to their job or a medical condition like diabetes that can cause foot wounds. Athletes can benefit as well, since custom insoles may improve performance and prevent injuries.
To make a pair of custom orthotics, your podiatrist uses laser scanning technology. You stand on a small platform that acts as a digital scanner, and in less than a minute it relays an image of your feet to a computer for analysis. Types of Orthotics, Braces, and Fit
There are two main types of orthotics available, depending on your needs and the condition of your feet. Functional orthotics are used for biomechanical issues of the feet and are designed to control the movement of your feet. These orthotics are generally made from semi-rigid materials like plastic or graphite. Accommodative orthotics are softer and used to add cushion and support for painful foot conditions like calluses, corns, and diabetic foot wounds.
We also offer QUADRASTEP foot orthotics, which are manufactured from an injection molded thermoplastic compound for strength with a soft-edge feel that gives support while maintaining comfort. They are a single piece incorporating all of the required postings, recesses, and heel cup or sidewall heights to effectively treat your foot type.
Your podiatrist can make custom orthotics for a wide variety of shoes, including work boots, athletic shoes, ballet-style flat shoes, and tennis shoes. There are also custom orthotic sandals and slippers available if desired. If a foot brace or ankle brace is ever needed, we can custom-fit braces to ensure more support and comfort.
Orthotics can be made within 5 to 7 business days, though rush orders can be completed in three days for an additional fee. In most cases, custom orthotics last 2 to 4 years, depending on how often they are worn and the amount of wear-and-tear they sustain. The right-fitting orthotics typically lead to less pain and discomfort throughout the day, and often can prevent a need for surgery.
